2013 Caldecott Medal

30 Jan

It’s the 75th Anniversary of the Caldecott Medal!

caldecott75_bannerThe Caldecott Medal is one of the most well-known and sought after awards in children’s literature.

The 2013 Caldecott Medal winner is…

It’s no surprise that Klassen’s dark comedy about a hat-stealing fish took this honor. The illustrations are simply stunning.

As much I as enjoyed This Is Not My Hat, Klassen’s 2011 hit I Want My Hat Back is still my favorite.

The quirky story of a bear who has lost his hat is laugh-out-loud funny. I recommend I Want My Hat Back and This Is Not My Hat for kids ages 4 and up.

And don’t forget to check out this year’s Caldecott Honor books!

Thanks for the report. I’ve not read any of those books!! This fall I studied through an exhibit in the downtown San Francisco library of Caldlecoltt winners– many original drawing/paintings from a private collection. Loved it.

I’m not a huge Jon Klassen fan, so I wasn’t thrilled with him taking the medal AND an honor, but I’m still holding out hope that I’ll grow to love him. I wrote up some of my thoughts on the winners here: http://sunlitpages.blogspot.com/2013/01/ala-youth-media-awards-my-unbiased-and.html
