A Family Hanukkah Book

Today I’m excited to share a lovely Hanukkah-themed picture book, Eight Winter Nights: A Family Hanukkah Book (©2010) written by Laura Krauss Melmed and illustrated by Elisabeth Schlossberg.

Eight Winter Nights is a collection of short, festive poems about Hanukkah. The poems tell the story of one family’s Hanukkah celebration. The family light candles, play the dreidel game, receive visitors, and fry up tasty potato latkes during eight joyful nights.

The best thing about this book is how accessible it is. Children of all ages and faiths will love reading about this holiday. The book includes back matter covering the history of Hanukkah and traditions like dreidels, latkes, and tzedakah, which is the practice of giving aid. Many Jewish homes keep a tzedakah box for collecting coins, and donate the money to needy families or other charitable organizations during Hanukkah.

While I am not Jewish, I look forward to reading Eight Winter Nights to my kids one day, to teach them about this special holiday. You will definitely want to add this charming Hanukkah book to your collection. I recommend this book for ages 3-6.
