The Birds of Bethlehem

Looking for something new to read this Christmas? The Birds of Bethlehem (©2012) by Tomie dePaola is a fresh and creative take on the nativity story.

birdsofbethlehemEarly one morning, the birds of the town of Bethlehem gather together to share some extraordinary news. From their unique perspective, the birds have seen a series of astonishing events. The birds watched as an angel appeared in the sky and spoke to the shepherds watching their sheep. Clearly, a miraculous thing had come to pass.

While I didn’t find this book to be as wonderful as many of Tomie dePaola’s other books like Pancakes for Breakfast, The Popcorn Book, and Strega Nona, it is still a fun read. The story is simple and sweet, and the colorful painted illustrations will delight children of all ages.

This book makes an excellent read-aloud and I recommend it for children ages 3-8.
