Chick-o-Saurus Rex

I am so pleased to have Youth Literature Reviews as the first stop on the official blog tour for the new picture book Chick-o-Saurus Rex (©2013) by Lenore and Daniel Jennewein.

Chick-o-Saurus Rex

All Little Chick wants is to fit in, and to play with the other animals in the tree house. But three barnyard bullies tell Little Chick that chickens are not brave and mighty enough to be a part of the club. Determined to prove them wrong, Little Chick sets out on a quest that leads to a huge discovery: chickens are descendants of the Tyrannosaurus Rex; the biggest and mightiest of them all!

Chick-o-Saurus Rex

Armed with this powerful knowledge, Little Chick dons the moniker Chick-o-Saurus Rex and heads to the tree house to tell the other animals about his impressive ancestry. When he arrives he uses his new found courage to save the bullies from a hungry wolf, proving that strength and heroism have nothing to do with size.

Chick-o-Saurus Rex was a fun story that will appeal to a lot of kids, especially those interested in dinosaurs. The book has a lot of word repetition to aid beginning readers, and the story is full of humor and heart. Little Chick’s struggles are sure to spark a discussion about bullying, inclusion, and bravery. There is an author’s note at the end which explains some of the research behind this story. I recommend this book for ages 4-8.

That sounds hilarious and I love the message behind the book. My kids always joke around “There goes a dinosaur” when a bird flies by – birds are, in fact I’m told, the only living descendants of the dinosaurs. The Chick is right! Thanks for linking this post in the Kid Lit Blog Hop. 🙂
