YA Favorite: 45 Pounds (More or Less)

For any teens out there looking for a new book to read over spring break, I highly recommend 45 Pounds (More or Less) (©2013) by K.A. Barson.

45 Pounds (More or Less)Sixteen-year-old Ann has always struggled with her weight. Feeling constantly prodded by her thin, “perfect” mother, Ann is constantly caught in a vicious cycle of self-loathing and self-medicating with food. When her aunt announces that she wants Ann to be a bridesmaid in her upcoming wedding, Ann decides that she must lose 45 pounds in 2 months to fit into a fabulous dress. This decision leads Ann to make a series of discoveries about herself, her friends, and her mom, who isn’t as perfect as she seems.

The story is heartwarming and thought-provoking, and the characters are genuine. While the book tackles some tough issues, the author keeps the overall tone light with well-timed humor. Anyone who has ever struggled with weight or body image will relate to Ann, and those who haven’t will still find it easy to empathize with her. 45 Pounds (More or Less) is the perfect mix of laughs and tears, and a thoroughly enjoyable book from start to finish. I recommend it for ages 13+.
