Botanical Beauty: 80 Essential Recipes for Natural Spa Products (©2017) by Aubre Andrus is brand-new book from Switch Press, a young adult imprint of Capstone Publishing.
The book is split up into four sections: Hands and Feet, Body, Face, and Hair. There is a great variety of recipes in each chapter, from soaks, scrubs, and balms to perfume, shaving cream, face masks, deodorant, and so much more. Every recipe is accompanied by a beautiful photo and clear, thorough instructions. The last chapter features tips and tutorials on how to package your spa-worthy creations for gift giving.
I tested out several of the recipes in this book to see how they would hold up. The Vanilla Honey Shower Scrub and Vanilla Coffee Lip Scrub smelled good enough to eat! The Face Lotion and Exfoliating Face Scrub were easy to make and gentle on my sensitive skin. My favorite recipe was the Foot Repair Stick, a cleverly designed solid balm that is going to be my saving grace during sandal season.
Every project in this book is simple and inexpensive to make. Many of the recipes, like the scrubs, can be made with common pantry items like sugar and coconut oil. Some of the lotion and balm recipes call for ingredients like shea butter, beeswax, and essential oils. You can find these ingredients at health food stores or online at stores like Bramble Berry, Mountain Rose Herbs, and Amazon.
Botanical Beauty is a fun book that crafty teens and tweens will love. I recommend this book for ages 13 and up, or for ages 9-12 under adult supervision.
