Mermaid School

Sometimes you see a book and instantly know that it deserves a permanent spot in your collection. On a recent trip to our local bookstore I spotted Mermaid School (©2018) written by Joanne Stewart Wetzel and illustrated by Julianna Swaney, and I knew that I had to bring it home. My daughter in starting Pre-K in a few short weeks and I’ve been on the hunt for some exciting school-themed picture books to help ease the transition. This whimsical rhyming story follows a group of young mermaids on their very first day of school. The students practice counting, recite their A-B-Seas, build sandcastles at recess and enjoy clamburgers and seaweed pie for lunch. After art class, music class, and story time, they sing a goodbye song and head home, eager for another school day.

While so many school-themed books revolve around first-day jitters and anxiety, Mermaid School focuses instead on the excitement of making new friends and learning new things.

Swaney’s charming gouache and watercolor illustrations are beautifully rendered and full of thoughtful details. The pastel tones evoke a dreamy quality that perfectly embodies the underwater setting. The sweet-faced mermaids (and merboys) have diverse skin and hair color.

I highly recommend Mermaid School for any child who is preparing to start school, especially if they love mermaids! Ages 3-6.
