Apple Books for Preschoolers

It’s apple season! Today I’m sharing some apple books that are perfect for preschoolers. Last year I homeschooled my preschooler and we did a big unit on apples in early fall. I’m looking forward to reading these fantastic apple books again this autumn, hopefully before a day of apple-picking (we do live in Washington, after all).

Without further ado, here are my favorite apple-themed picture books for children ages 3-6!

Apples, Apples Everywhere! Learning about Apple Harvests by Robin Koontz

A pair of children visit an apple orchard and learn how apples are harvested and stored. After a day of apple picking, bobbing for apples, and helping make apple cider on the farm, the children indulge in some delicious apple treats.

Applesauce Day by Lisa Amstutz and Talitha Shipman

Every autumn Maria and her family make applesauce together. They visit a local orchard to pick apples and then spend the day at grandma’s house washing, cutting, and finally cooking the apples in the special applesauce pot that has been in the family for generations. This sweet, well-written story is sure to inspire kids and families to get in the kitchen and start a new family tradition!

Apples for Everyone (National Geographic Kids) by Jill Esbaum

This nonfiction book is packed with colorful photographs and gives and a brief introduction of the history, uses, and different types of apples.

Apple Farmer Annie by Monica Wellington

Annie the apple farmer grows all kinds of apples on her orchard. She uses some of the apples to make delicious apple cider, applesauce, muffins, cakes, and pies. Then she packs up the goodies, along with plenty of fresh apples, and heads to the city to sell her wares at the farmer’s market.

Fall Apples: Crisp and Juicy by Martha E. H. Rustad and Amanda Enright

A young girl and her family visit an apple orchard and learn all about apples! This fun, fact-filled book covers the germination and growth cycle of an apple plant, many of the uses of apples, and contains a recipe, a glossary, and additional resources.

Apples and Pumpkins by Anne Rockwell and Lizzy Rockwell

A little girl and her parents visit a local farm to pick apples and pumpkins. They fill a basket with ripe apples, and the little girl chooses her favorite pumpkin to bring home for a jack-o-lantern. This is a simple, cute book to read before a child’s first trip to an apple orchard or pumpkin patch.

Ten Apples Up on Top by Theo. LeSieg (Dr. Seuss)

With zany characters and a fun, rhyming story, toddlers and preschoolers will enjoy counting along as the apples stack higher and higher!
