Book Review: Amy’s Brass Band

Amy’s Brass Band (©2019) written by Amy Schumaker Bliss and illustrated by Allie Geddert is a new picture book that music lovers, music teachers, and young aspiring musicians will love.

Brass bands, which consist entirely of brass and percussion instruments, are among the three most common types of large music ensembles (alongside orchestra and wind ensemble). When Dr. Amy Schumaker Bliss couldn’t find a children’s book about brass bands for her young son, she decided to write one herself! Amy is a brass band expert, holding multiple degrees in music performance and music education.

Written with the expertise of a music educator, Amy’s Brass Band is an entertaining and informative glimpse into the history of brass bands, written in a way that is accessible to young readers.I loved learning about all of the different kinds of instruments that make up a brass band. Detailed illustrations accompany text describing what cornets, trombones, euphoniums, flugelhorns, and tubas bring to the overall sound of an ensemble.

The vibrant, cheerful illustrations are diverse and inclusive. Wide-eyed, cartoon style figures of many different races, some with differing physical abilities, grace each page.

Amy’s Brass Band is an incredibly unique children’s book, one that is sure to inspire a whole new generation of brass band enthusiasts.
